Background-

Belgian-American particle physicist Francis Halzen has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics for key contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos from astrophysical sources, the award-giving body announced.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences selects the physics laureates. The prize carries 12 million Swedish crowns, about $1.2 million, which winners share when several people receive it.

Physics held a prominent place in Alfred Nobel’s will, and the prize remains one of the field’s highest honors. Established under that will, the Nobel Prizes honor achievements in science, literature and peace, and Sweden’s central bank later added the economics award. Over the decades, the physics prize has recognized discoveries that reshaped humanity’s understanding of the universe.

Past laureates include Albert Einstein, Marie and Pierre Curie, Max Planck and Niels Bohr, whose work laid the foundations of modern physics.

The physics prize was the second Nobel announced this year, following the medicine prize, with chemistry next in line.

Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf will present the medals at a ceremony in Stockholm, held on the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death. A banquet at Stockholm City Hall follows the ceremony. The peace prize is awarded separately in Oslo, the only Nobel presented outside Sweden.
