Background-

Boston Dynamics has appointed Rohit Prasad, a former Amazon executive, as its new chief executive officer, with the change taking effect immediately.

The humanoid robot maker, which Hyundai Motor Group owns, announced the leadership move and named Prasad as the person who will guide the company forward.

Prasad joins from Amazon, where he served as senior vice president and head scientist for Alexa and Artificial General Intelligence. His work there spanned the Alexa voice assistant and the push toward Artificial General Intelligence.

Boston Dynamics said Prasad will bring experience in turning physical AI breakthroughs into commercial success. The company highlighted that background as he steps into the top job.

Prasad takes over from Robert Playter, who guided Boston Dynamics until earlier this year.

The appointment arrives as Hyundai Motor Group advances its robot strategy. The group aims to build a factory able to produce 30,000 robot units a year within the next few years. It plans to begin deploying those robots across all of its manufacturing sites at that point.

Hyundai shared those targets earlier this year, and they show how central robots are to its manufacturing plans.

As a Hyundai Motor Group company, Boston Dynamics stands to play a direct part in those plans, with Prasad now steering its direction.

Prasad’s arrival gives the robot maker a leader with a deep background in artificial intelligence as the group builds toward large-scale robot production and wider factory deployment.
