Background

TotalEnergies is expanding its joint venture with investment firm KKR in the United States through an additional renewables portfolio valued at $1.2 billion, the French energy company announced.

The deal covers three utility-scale solar assets in Texas and Ohio with a combined capacity of 700 megawatts. These assets join the venture the two companies formed in 2025, which currently holds 1.4 gigawatts of capacity. The addition lifts the venture’s total portfolio to 2.1 gigawatts.

All three solar assets should reach commercial operation by the first quarter of 2027, which brings new generating capacity online across both states.

Third parties already buy electricity from some of the assets, while TotalEnergies will market the power from the others.

TotalEnergies will continue to operate the assets after the transaction closes, which the companies expect in 2026. That keeps TotalEnergies in charge of running the plants as the partnership grows.

The expansion builds on the partnership between TotalEnergies and KKR and adds more utility-scale solar to a venture that already operates at gigawatt scale. One gigawatt equals 1,000 megawatts, so the new portfolio adds 0.7 gigawatts to the existing base.

Large solar plants of this kind send electricity straight into the power grid, where utilities, corporations and other customers buy it.

The deal widens the footprint of TotalEnergies and KKR in American renewable energy and brings fresh solar projects to Texas and Ohio. It also points to steady investor appetite for solar power across the United States.
