Background-

SAP says its SAP Business Network uses agentic AI to help buyers, suppliers and other trading partners work together and cut the risk of supply chain disruption.

SAP calls the network the world’s largest business-to-business marketplace. It handled more than US$8 trillion in commerce across over 940 million transactions in the 12 months to the third quarter of 2026. AI agents on the network read large volumes of operational data and carry out tasks within limits that businesses set to manage risk and meet compliance rules.

SAP wants the network to become the intelligence and execution layer for commerce between companies. It plans to combine SAP Business Suite, network data, SAP Business Data Cloud and its AI solution Joule to support more predictive and autonomous work in sourcing, procurement, supplier management and finance.

Spend and supply chains offer the biggest gains, SAP says. A manufacturer, for example, must balance revenue, service levels, inventory and production limits in real time. AI can run simulations, suggest alternative sourcing or distribution plans, and act on them precisely. It can also raise questions companies may have missed before hidden weak spots cause harm.

Humans stay in charge, the company stresses. Agentic tools must work within an organisation’s approved guardrails and internal controls, and they must record the factors behind each automated transaction for audit. AI will handle routine tasks such as demand forecasts, purchase orders and shipment schedules, while professionals keep strategic judgment.

Because data comes together in the cloud at the network layer, SAP says fragmented systems no longer block a full view of the supply chain.
