Key Background
Canada’s Enbridge Inc., one of North America’s major clean energy players, is deepening its renewable portfolio by pouring an all-time high US $900 million into solar. San Antonio, Texas-based 600-megawatt clean energy-producing solar facility Clear Fork, located north-east of the city, will be providing 600 megawatts of clean energy exclusively to data centers of Meta Platforms Inc. The initiative is in line with Meta’s vision to run 100% clean energy for the world.
Construction on the Clear Fork solar power plant is already in progress, with commercial operation and development to be followed next summer 2027. Meta acquired a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA), whereby all generated energy will supply its growing fleet of data centers. The transaction reflects more cooperation among renewable power developers and leading tech companies to minimize carbon emissions while keeping pace with surging energy demand powered by artificial intelligence and cloud computing.
Enbridge has also diversified its portfolio away from conventional oil and gas plants in recent years. The company has invested more than US$8 billion in clean energy projects since it commissioned its first wind plant in 2002, and now has 23 wind farms, 13 solar farms, and a geothermal plant. Together, the assets generate as much power as is needed to fuel about 1.3 million houses, highlighting Enbridge’s ambitions to become an energy powerhouse with a green twist.
Enbridge power president Matthew Akman described the Clear Fork project as proof of the stratospheric level of corporate renewable power transactions, particularly from the likes of Meta. The project not only produces firm and clean power but also demonstrates Enbridge’s capability to provide behemoth-sized, low-risk renewable power solutions.
Basically, this collaboration between Meta and Enbridge is a landmark in speeding up the clean energy transition. The Clear Fork solar project is the best example of how the energy industry players and technology companies are coming together to achieve sustainability goals and usher in the world’s energy transformation with visionary, mega-scale projects.
