Key Background:

Canada-headquartered Montréal, IRV, a deep-tech venture capital specialist, first established its venture fund towards the end of 2022 to achieve an initial close of $14 million CAD. Although it had originally targeted a goal of $40 million, the fund struggled in raising funds. As a result, there was also a change of strategy, and the company realigned its management and changed its investment strategy to fit the scaled-down size of the fund. To date up to 2025, IRV has made only two investments: CarbiCrete, a cleantech firm producing decarbonized concrete, and Oneka Technologies, a company specializing in desalination technologies.

Neha Khera joined IRV as managing partner in April 2025. With more than 13 years of early-stage investing experience at MaRS Investment Accelerator Fund, 500 Canada, and 2048 Ventures, Khera joins the firm with extensive experience. IRV, under her leadership, in the next three years will be investing in 25–30 early-stage deep-tech startups operating in the area of artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, Internet of Things (IoT), and advanced materials. The company’s investment in each startup will be $250,000–$500,000 and will have a major focus on making these investments largely in pre-seed-stage startups in Canada with options to look at it internationally as well.

IRV’s new emphasis is one of a wider trend in venture capital, with more focus on deep-tech areas like AI, robotics, and materials. These are the most important technologies for innovation and have enormous potential for breakthroughs that can transform. By focusing on startups with solid intellectual property and technical leads, IRV hopes to seed the creation of breakthrough technologies that can fundamentally alter industries. The company’s focused investment approach bears testimony to its dedication to creating a successful deep-tech ecosystem that solves world challenges and advances long-term technological development.
